Amethyst is a naturally-occurring large crystal formation and is a variety of quartz that usually grows on the inside of agate geodes.

Geodes containing amethyst crystals are formed when clay, silt, sand or gravel are deposited and compacted by running water. While the crystals themselves may grow to be several inches, the geodes containing the amethyst crystals often reach several feet in height.

 

Amethyst is a fairly hard gemstone (7) and is less susceptible to damage.


Amethyst can come in colors from pale to deep purple and gets is color from maganese and/or iron. Found in Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Africa, Canada, Russia, the USA and Europe, it has a hardness of seven.
 

Amethyst in Greek Mythology

Amethyst is a stone that has roots in Ancient Greek mythology.  A nymph character named Amethystos refused the attentions of Dionysus, the god of wine and intoxication. As he pursued her, she prayed for protection and to preserve her chastity.

The virgin goddess Artemis answered Amethystos' call for help and transformed the nymph into a white or clear stone. The story ends with Dionysus pouring his wine over the stone — either accidentally or deliberately — dyeing the crystal purple.

Purple dye was a royal choice in the ancient Mediterranean region of the world. Amethyst stone became associated with wealth and power. At this time, amethyst adorned the robes and crowns of rich and powerful monarchs. At this time, amethyst was viewed as equal in value to rubies, emeralds and sapphires.
